Product Description

Pepetools Smart Flux is a specialised liquid firecoat flux designed to help prevent firescale and oxidation when soldering gold, silver, and other non-ferrous jewellery metals. Based on the traditional Prips Flux formula, it creates a protective coating over the metal surface during heating, helping jewellers achieve cleaner soldering results while reducing the time spent removing firescale and refinishing jewellery.

Developed from the well-known formula created by University of Rochester professor Jack Prip, Smart Flux uses a modern, fluoride-free formulation designed for consistent firecoat protection. It is particularly useful when soldering sterling silver, where copper oxidation can cause stubborn firescale beneath the metal surface.

Unlike conventional soldering fluxes that are primarily applied around the solder joint, Smart Flux is designed to coat the entire workpiece. When correctly applied and heated, it forms a thin, even white protective layer that helps minimise oxidation and firescale during soldering and annealing.

Key Features

  • Firescale Protection: Helps prevent firescale and oxidation during jewellery soldering and heating
  • Prips Flux Formula: Based on the traditional firecoat recipe developed by Professor Jack Prip
  • Fluoride Free: Modern formulation without fluoride compounds
  • Liquid Application: Easy to apply evenly across the entire metal surface
  • Protective Firecoat: Forms a thin white coating that helps protect the metal during heating
  • Reduced Finishing Time: Helps minimise the need for aggressive firescale removal and surface refinishing
  • Versatile Metal Compatibility: Suitable for gold, silver, copper, brass, nickel silver, and other non-ferrous metals
  • Professional Jewellery Use: Ideal for fabrication, soldering, annealing, and workshop applications

How to Use Smart Flux

  1. Clean the Workpiece: Ensure the metal is free from grease, dirt, polishing compounds, and other contaminants.
  2. Gently Preheat: Briefly brush the metal with a gentle torch flame to warm the surface.
  3. Apply Smart Flux: Apply the liquid flux evenly over the workpiece while the metal is warm.
  4. Coat the Entire Surface: Continue applying until the entire workpiece is covered, leaving no exposed metal.
  5. Heat Gently: Carefully heat the coated workpiece until the moisture evaporates and a thin, uniform white coating develops.
  6. Avoid Overheating: If the coating turns gold or brown during preparation, the metal has been overheated. If liquid remains in certain areas, additional gentle heating may be required.
  7. Proceed with Soldering: Once the protective white coating has formed, continue with your normal soldering process using an appropriate soldering flux at the joint where required.
  8. Clean After Soldering: Place the workpiece in a suitable jewellery pickling solution, such as Bench Basics Smart Pickle, to remove the remaining flux residue.

Applications

  • Preventing firescale during sterling silver soldering
  • Protecting gold and silver jewellery during heating
  • Jewellery fabrication and assembly
  • Annealing precious and non-ferrous metals
  • Reducing oxidation during torch work
  • Protecting larger metal surfaces during soldering
  • Professional jewellery manufacturing and repair

Important Information

Smart Flux is primarily a firecoat and firescale prevention product. For best results, coat the entire workpiece rather than applying it only to the solder joint. An appropriate soldering flux may still be required to promote solder flow at the joint.

Correct application is important. A thin, even white coating indicates that the firecoat has been prepared correctly. Avoid excessive heating during application, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the protective layer.

Pepetools Smart Flux is a practical addition to any jewellery soldering bench, helping protect precious metals from firescale, reduce unnecessary surface finishing, and achieve cleaner, more consistent results during jewellery fabrication.
